Chapter 12

I RACED AROUND THE room as I tried to find my other black sandal. Mumbling under my breath, I looked underneath the bed again and luckily found it in the corner of my comforter. Rising from the floor, I tossed it into the side pocket of my suitcase along with the mate.

I had a bad habit of always waiting until the last minute to pack, no matter how many times I told myself to start early. Unconsciously my brow furrowed. Once again, I was paying for my procrastination.

While retrieving a bottle of cocoa butter from the top of the chest of drawers, my eyes traveled over to a small digital clock on the nightstand. A soft gasp escaped my lips. I had less than thirty minutes to get ready. I raced into the bathroom, and in two minutes I was under the stream of hot relaxing water with memories of the days before dancing through my mind.

I had risen Wednesday morning to find it still pouring raining outside and David’s body enveloped against mine. Without waking him, I had slipped out of the bed and out the door without making a sound. Lying next to someone as sexy as David had been almost impossible. He had held me through the night and his arousal was evident against my thigh. All I knew was with a long weekend ahead of us I had to pull myself together quickly. Otherwise, I was going to be in trouble.

A few moments later, I was dressed in a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt. I took a seat on the end of the bed and was slipping on a pair of socks, when my cell phone rang.

I glanced down at the caller ID before picking up the receiver, smiling.

“Hello, Uncle Tad,” I sang merrily.

“Hi, Calaine. Are you all packed?”

“Just about,” I answered as I reached down and slipped on a pair of Nike tennis shoes.

“Well, I just wanted to catch you before you left and let you know that a colleague of mine knows Coletta.”

“Really!” I gasped. “Have you talked to her?”

“No, not yet. She used to work for Boone Hospital but retired last year. I’m hoping to get some more information on Monday.”

“That’s wonderful! Thanks, Uncle Tad.”

He paused shortly. “You don’t ever have to thank me. You know there isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for you.”

“I know and I love you for it,” I replied, voice filled with emotion.

“Calaine, I...we—”

“Don’t worry. Everything is going to be just fine.” I had heard the worry in his voice. “Well, I better go. David will be here any minute.”

“Good luck in San Antonio. I hope you find some answers.”

“Thanks. I love you.”

“I love you too.”

After hanging up the phone, I found my heart sang with delight. Every discovery brought me that much closer to finding my birth mother. What if she had been right under my nose all this time? My pulse jumped with anticipation, and I had to take a deep breath. I was getting ahead of myself and maybe setting myself up for disappointment in the process.
